About this site

This repository now uses a visual-essay style inspired by a modern long-form web template. It combines narrative structure with an interactive map, a clickable city list, and historical population estimates for Jewish communities in Mediterranean port cities.

The map and list are designed to work together: click any city in the list to fly to that location on the map and reveal the population details.

Jewish population estimates, 1890–1930

The table below lists the major Mediterranean port cities displayed on the map, with approximate Jewish population counts at the height of each community during the historical period covered.

Sources and notes

The numbers on this page are approximate historical estimates. They are intended to illustrate relative community size rather than provide exact census figures.

City coordinates are plotted using MapLibre GL JS, with each city clickable from both the map and the adjacent interactive list.
